3 Popular Marketing Tips We Respectfully Disagree With

Everyone online is handing out the same marketing advice.

Post every day. Go viral. Optimize for the algorithm. And if you follow that advice without questioning it, you might spend months busy with marketing activity while nothing actually moves for your business.

We disagree with a few of the most repeated tips out there. Not to be contrarian. But because we have seen what they cost the people who follow them.

Here are three.

TIP ONE: "Post every day or the algorithm will forget you."

This one keeps professionals trapped in a content treadmill. They burn out trying to produce daily content, quality drops, and then they go completely silent for three weeks because they have nothing left to say.

Consistency matters far more than frequency. Three well thought out posts a week that say something real about your expertise will do more for your credibility than seven rushed posts that fill a feed but build nothing. The algorithm does not reward noise. People stop paying attention to noise.

TIP TWO: "Focus on growing your followers first, then worry about leads."

This is backwards for most professionals and small business owners. A thousand followers who are not your target audience will never become clients. A following of two hundred people, built slowly around the right message and the right positioning, is more valuable than ten thousand people who found you because of a trending audio or a giveaway post.

Visibility is only worth something when the right people are seeing you. Numbers on a screen do not pay invoices.

TIP THREE: "Just start posting. You will figure out your message as you go."

This one feels practical. It sounds encouraging. And it leads a lot of good professionals to spend a year posting without a clear direction, wondering why nothing is working.

You do not need to figure out your content before you figure out what you want to be known for. Start with the question of positioning: who exactly is your audience, what specific problem do you solve for them, and why should they trust you over anyone else? Once you know the answers, content becomes straightforward. Without those answers, you are just guessing publicly.

The uncomfortable truth is that most marketing advice online is designed to keep you engaged with the advice, not to help your business grow.

Effective visibility needs clarity before it needs content, and it needs strategy before it needs frequency.
